Butterfly Badges – Making a Contribution to Sustainable Event Organisation

‘Contributing to a sustainable future can be very straightforward.’

Hermann Hanser, owner of CPO HANSER SERVICE GmbH

Inital Situation

Before switching to butterfly badges, badges were placed in transparent plastic covers. In addition to the waste caused by these covers, there paper consumption was increased because the remained of the pages on which the badges were printed could no longer be used.
We wanted to move away from plastic covers, reduce paper consumption and improve the overall workflow (preparing badges and handling them during the events).
Butterfly badges do not require a plastic cover, and we use the rest of the sheet on which the badge is printed to print the booking confirmation. This also significantly reduces the workload because badges do not have to be prepared, but can be printed locally. Furthermore, participants can print out butterfly badges themselves using a ‘fast lane’ terminal.

Concept Description

At the time we launched the butterfly badges, hardly any companies were producing this type of badge. We sat down with a print shop, discussed the concept, made some draft designs and agreed on technical realisation by the print shop.
On our side, our in-house registration system was adapted, and printers were adjusted to meet the new requirements.

Results

Since 2009, we have only worked using butterfly badges. The feedback from customers and participants has been consistently positive.
The amount of waste has been significantly reduced.
At the same time, the amount of work that goes into preparing and managing events is lower.
