International Award – Hamburg is a "Global Active City"
Hamburg is one of the first cities worldwide to officially have been awarded with the title of "Global Active City" - together with Buenos Aires, Lillehammer, Liverpool, Ljubljana and Richmond in Canada.
The Active Well-being Initiative, which is responsible for the certification and awarding of the Global Active City label, announced that: "These cities have worked hard to enable their residents to lead active and health-conscious lifestyles,". The cities have successfully undergone an independent, detailed review of their sport and physical activity strategies.
After the failed Olympic bid, the Hamburg Senate adopted the "Active City Master Plan" and pursued a sports-based development perspective for Hamburg. The master plan includes 32 projects from the Olympic plan that, once implemented, will modernise and expand Hamburg's sports infrastructure. The beneficiary is sport in its entire spectrum: popular and elite sports, school sports, club and recreational sports.
